Title: The Lorax

Category: Content Area

Author: Dr. Seuss

Publisher/Year: Random House Books for Young Readers / 1971

Genre: Science Fiction, Picture Book

Pages: 72pp

Summary: This is a story narrated by The Once-ler to a young child. The land was beautiful and lush, full of Truffula Trees. All the animals that lived there were happy and healthy living off the ecology of the biome. Then the Once-ler moved in and used up the resources forcing the sickly animals to move away or parish and the environment to become polluted. The Lorax speaks for the trees and animals urging the Once-ler to stop using up the resources for his manufacturing but the Once-ler ignores his pleas and until all the resources have been exploited. When the Once-ler finishes recounted the whole story to the young child he realizes something. He needs to pass on the last Truffula seed to grow a new tree in hopes of healing the area.

Comments: This book has a heavy environmental message but is told in a cute rhyming way. It is a long book to read aloud but the message is good.

Classroom Application:
Lexile: 560L
Age: 6-18 years old
Use when studying:

  • Endangered animals
  • Recycling
  • Pollution
This is a fun book to read and start conversations during National Recycling Week or Earth Day. In a Tech class these would be conversation starters for online discussions.

Also, talk about who responsible for the damage caused by the Thneeds' production.
  • Is it only the Once-ler's fault or do the consumers contribute to it for not helping the Lorax stop it and buy not purchasing thneeds?
  • Do our actions and inventions digitally effect others positively or negatively and who is responsible?
A writing idea could be to try and write in Dr. Seuss format with rhyming words and making up new silly names for things.
